[...] At the end of my post Future Shock – Future Focus I pondered on whether in the IT teaching sector we could use the technology of ‘virtual worlds’ to help engage our students. A comment from dswaters (Sue) pointed out that she felt that I and others in IT appear to be reluctant in embracing eLearning strategies and content with our students. So I thought I would start by clarifying my understanding of ‘eLearning’. A simple search in Google “What is eLearning” returns many definitions with the Wikipedia definition: [...]

Good post Frances, glad to see that you have now got into blogging. Good to see my addiction has spread to you and my friend Sue Hickton.

Interesting your comment about it being harder to engage students under 20 in Cert II and III IT level. I know from discussion that you do not perceive adopting some e-learning within their on-campus classes would enhance IT programs. And I can not comment on IT because it is not my area, however to me an IT program, really lends itself to incorporating these strategies.
For example, you could set up a class wiki and students to exchange tips and ideas for helping one another while they do their class work or they could create podcasts to showcase their work. Benefit to the students, besides hopefully increasing engagement, is that they could use what they have posted online to promote job prospects. More importantly if they are going to work in IT, it would be good for them to gain more experience of how the Internet is evolving, we can not assume they already have it.
