For the past two years I have been an avid user of Twitter, I am sure I have gained more from my conversations than I have given, made many great contacts, lots of real life friends and learnt a lot. Outside of this network I have found that the mere mention of the word Twitter, let alone trying to explain what it has to offer and trying to get other engaged has evoked the word “twit” in the listeners mind. I see their eyes glaze over and the look that say’s “She needs to get a life”. it has been a case of “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink”.

Not anymore it seems, with all the current media coverage of Twitter boy has that changed. Twitter is now three years old and it is the word of the moment, everywhere you turn it is being mentioned as the new *BIG* thing. The growth of Twitter users has been massive over the past few months it seems every politician, rock band, celebrity, TV show, magazine, newspaper….  all now have twitter accounts.

So is this good or bad?

This question has sparked a lot of discussion on Twitter with some users annoyed that Twitter is not being used “properly”. Seeing that most of us aren’t actually using Twitter in the way that it was originally perceived where uses left tweets in reply to the question “What are you doing?” I think the more the merrier. Twitter has developed into a communication tool, a community of users who share information, help each other and have many many conversations.

One of the things that is different with the new Twits is they tend to have hundreds of thousands of followers but only follow back a few people, this can lead to one way conversations within their twitter network, it just becomes an outlet for their tweets.  It is understandable that they don’t follow everyone back when you have a look at how many followers some people have like @coldplay (489,914 followers/2670 following) , @theellenshow (Ellen DeGeneres 696,746 followers/17 following ) and @aplusk (Ashton Kutcher 791,101 followers/60 following ) have, they would just be flooded with incoming tweets. I think it all comes down to using a tool for your needs, some like @stephenfry (395,062 followers/55199), and @bobbyllew (20,240 followers/203 following) use it to have 2 way conversations while others like @coldplay simply use it as a way of passing information onto fans, and for celebrities like and @mrskutcher (Demi Moore following 68/followers469,894 ) that have so much false information reported about them it must be fantastic to have such an instant quick way of setting the record straight. I wonder as the celebrities and media get a handle on using twitter whether the celebrities will find the true power of twitter and be able to diminish the power of the Paparazzi? If they continue to post their own photo’s on services like twitpic and video on Qik then the media outlets can sidestep the Paparazzi and simply use those photographs.

I will have to end this article or it will never get published. As I have been writing it I have come up with a few more post that I want to write on things like, Why I use twitter, What I get from Twitter and Tips Tricks and Tools for Twitter. To conclude this post I can sum up with Twitter is a tool, use it as you want to, engage with others and don’t take it too seriously as after all you you only have 140 characters to use.

cleaning2 Lost links and confusion

I mentioned in my last post that I had been playing around with the theme for my blog and adding tags to posts, this has now lead to another job of updating links. As I was trying different themes I found that I had two many pages and some of the names were too long and disrupted the flow of the theme. So to solve this I copied all the text from the Glossary page and added it to the Info page and changed the page named 31 Day Chocolate Challenge to Challenges. Then as I was adding tags and changing categories I found links to these pages and had to update the changes. So I was lucky that I changed the names and flow of the blog at the same time as I was opening each post to add tags etc.

A while back I decided I wanted to be consistent in the username I used online and so changed my twitter name to developit, of course through my blog I mentioned twitter and provided a link to “me” , this was another link to update. I also added MyBlogLog in the sidebar. I had not visited MyBlogLog in a while so before I could add it to the sidebar I needed to update all my Services so that had correct usernames. So hopefully that is it and links will all work within my site, this is not true if others have links to these pages but I suppose that is just the nature of the web.

Sometimes it is hard to remember what links I have within posts to other posts but after this exercise I will be more aware of checking links, I suppose link checking should be something to do occasionally just as I do on other websites that I manage but not something I had thought of in relation to my blog.

So my conclusion from these exercises is the same as when I clean and tidy my house, often it is harder to find things when they have been put away properly, when you start cleaning one things then everything else needs doing, but in the long run it is nice to walk into the house (blog dashboard) and see everything in its place. :)

Update: Well I had such a good holiday – 3 weeks that it took me 5 weeks to upload this post :-) but here it is

Well I have been on holidays of three days now and have basically been surfing the web, downloading stuff, listening to podcasts.

ScreenGrab

Screen grab

This is one of my favorite Firefox extensions that I use very frequently and I used it to capture the image above. One of the best features in Screen Grab is the ability to take screen shot of a specific region of a web page. This is great if you want to a quick screen shot for your blog. I use it even to copy part of images directly from the browser without having to open Photoshop to cut or resize.

Showcase

 Showcase

Showcase lets you view open tabs as image thumbnails and also has a find bar that will filter your thumbnails. A great tool if you have lots of tabs open at once – which I always do.

Web Developer

Web Developer

Adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools.

del.icio.us Bookmarks

del.icio.us Bookmarks

This extension integrates your browser with del.icio.us

del.icio.us lets you search and browse your bookmarks and you can access your bookmarks from any computer. This gives you more freedom and great access to your bookmarks without being tied to one specific computer. You can also share your bookmarks with other and search for similar bookmarks in the del.icio.us network.

Here is my del.icio.us account

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon lets you “channelsurf” the best-reviewed sites on the web. It helps you find and share great sites.

MeeTimer

MeeTimer

MeeTimer is a very useful tool to monitor where you spend your time online, and to help you be proactive in becoming more productive.

MeeTimer gives you everything from a simple page timer to advanced stats on your usage habits; with a focus on highlighting where your time could be used better (more productive = more free time = better day!).
As it runs all the time, every effort has been made to make it fast & light; and it benefits greatly from Firefox’s inbuilt database for speed.

Colorful Tabs & ChromaTabs

Addon

Colorful Tabs colors each of your tabs in pastel colors, colours are assigned randomly and as long as that tab stays open the colour will stay the same. So the same tab will keep the same colour even if the URL for that tab changes.

ChromaTabs is similar to Colorful Tabs. The difference is that with ChromaTabs a tab’s color is determined on the hostname in the URL. If you keep the tab open and go to a different URL then the tab colour will change.

Twitter

Twitter

My favourite at the moment . It is difficult to describe in words how this works. I tried to explain it today but found it better to login and show how it works. Nat Torkington sums it up well when he describes it as “Think of it as a cross between blogging and instant messaging: you type a short message (140 or fewer chars) and your subscribers (friends) instantly see it. You can view a single “river of news” page that functions as a group blog by all your friends.”

You can follow me on twitter/developit

Twittervision Twittervision 3D and Flickrvision Flickrvision 3D

twittervision_logo

Twittevisiontweet

These two I discovered and found that they can be very addictive. Watching Tweets and images pop up, BUT be warned you may see chat or images that are not very appropriate for “G” viewing.

You can even get screen savers that show Twitervision and Flickrvision But will you get any work done when you download these?

Mac Screensaver

XP Screensaver

Nat Torkington has a post with more details about Twittervision and Brady Forrest has a post about Flickrvision that goes into more detail

And there is always Twitterholics
